A Vietnam tragedy unites Rutgers Historian, Professor Michael Adas, and his student Joe Gilch who co-authored “Everyman in Vietnam,” a story about the forces that shaped an era.

Joe Gilch, 28, grew up haunted by the story of his uncle killed in the Vietnam War. As a kid, he poured over nearly 80 letters that Private James “Jimmy” Gilch wrote to his family and friends in South Jersey. But it wasn’t until Joe, then an undergrad at Rutgers-New Brunswick, wrote his senior thesis about his uncle’s wartime experience that he partnered with his professor, Michael Adas, to write the book that brings Jimmy’s history back to life.

Based on an exceptional collection of letters written by an American soldier during his tour of duty, “Everyman in Vietnam: A Soldier's Journey into the Quagmire” provides a gripping way to understand the nature and enduring significance of the Vietnam conflict.

All attendees will receive a copy of the book signed by the authors.
